Hello everyone. :) I'm new to this tribe but not to the disease. Does anyone else feel too tired to get up in the morning? What do you do about it? I'm so careful about gluten, I don't think there is any in my diet. (I even check my toothpaste). I've had a really hard time trying to get my strength back and put on some muscle mass. It's been 3 years since I stopped eating gluten. Has anyone else here suffered a lot of complications from Celiac? If not then you're really lucky... it can be pretty bad if there's a lot of damage.

Sadly, manufacturers of non-food items aren't under the same FDA guidelines as food manufacturers so these items are often not even considered by those on a GF diet.

Here's a few to look out for:
grain alcohols
denatured alcohols
ethyl alcohol/ethoxylate
wheat germamidopropyl betaine
glycol stearate
phenoxyethanol

These are most often found in hair color products, certain shampoos and conditioners, self-tanning lotions and adhesives (like stamps but also some bandages)

So, if your GF diet just doesn't seem to be working please consider that there may be other non-food sources. If in doubt, you can call 1-800-555-1212 for a list of company #'s for product information.

These are my symptoms: canker sores, numbness in fingers and toes, bloating, gas, constipation, diarrea, joint pain. I had the celiac panel done 2 months ago and it came back negative. Well, I had a colonoscopy and my results were: precancerous polyp and some flattening of the small intestines. My Gastro. doctor asked me if I had ever been tested for Celiac Sprue. I said "Are you kidding me?!". My family doctor is the one that tested me originally and it came back negative". Long story short, I am being tested again for Celiac Sprue. If it is not Celiac, what else could cause the flattening of my small intestines? The doctor is throwing around the term IBS to me. I'm ready to scream!! If anyone has any advice, much would be appreciated. Oh yea, my family doctor told me I have subclinical hypothyroidism, but my GI doctor is saying it is clinical hypothyroidism. The GI doctor said that there is sometimes a difference within Lab companies.:(

1) Before you went gluten free, did quantity matter as far as your symptoms were concerned? Or did certain foods set you off sometimes and not bother you at others? I find that I can eat certain things without consequence and then have to deal with the horrible bloated gas monster the next time I eat them.

2) I have a strange symptom that even my PCP couldn't explain. Whenever I get the horrible gas that won't dissipate, it is usually accompanied by a tenderness in my upper body and abdomen. It feels like I'm bruised, and it hurts my shoulders to wear a bra. Anyone experience that? If so, can you tell me what the heck it is?

I'm glutten-intollerent. Not tested but it is so consistant that it's obvious. If i have even a little bit of glutten, the next day I'm bloated, gassy, diarrhea, coated tongue, and out of it. I've been so good.

Well, yesterday I got some sushi. I had my own tamari, but I didn't think to ask about the sauce on the spicy salmon rolls. Today I'm paying for it. these episodes can last 3 days for me and I have stuff to do. I'm traveling. I popped some glutten-enzymes, but I doubt that will help at this stage of the game.

Any advice on what to do now that I'm experiencing problems? I have a date tonight and I think i'm going to have to miss it.

In my opinion, here are some books that I cherish. They made this journey a little easier to handle and a lot less mysterious.

Celiac Disease: The Hidden Epidemic by Peter H.R. Green and Rory Jones. Doctors Green and Jones are known in the field as THE Celiac Doctors. They are based in New York and head the major Celiac conferences in the East Coast. This book is a good guide for both the newly diagnosed as well as "old timers" to Celiac Disease. It explains the who/what/how/why of Celiac Disease and what you can do to help your doctor understand your needs.

Gluten Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide by Shelley Case, Dietitian. I went to a conference she was speaking at, and I think I took at least 10 pages of notes!! She breaks down the food you need to avoid, be careful of, and the foods you can and should have. As a dietitian, she is concerned about us celiacs eating the same 5 foods everyday at the expense of getting proper nutrition. She details alternate grains and how to cook and use them. She also gives sample 7 day diets for good nutrition. It is also worth noting that she is Canadian, and since the labelling laws are different between the us and canada, she makes understanding labels crystal clear. This book is almost overwhelming with the amount of information, so it is well worth the price. She also sells pocket guides to keep in your purse/pocket about what exactly is and is not gluten free.

Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Phyllis A Balch CNC. This is a large reference guide. I got mine from Whole Foods, but I've also seen it for sale at Costco! If you don't want to buy the whole thing you may be able to copy just the section on Celiac Disease and/or any related illnesses you have. This author gives natural remedies for almost every ailment under the sun, all arranged alphabetically. She tells you what supplements and vitamins to buy, in the order of importance, and why you need them. I follow the programs for Celiac Disease and for Low Immunity. I can't imagine trying to get well without the supplements she's suggested. The vitamins and supplements recommendations I got from this book really made a huge difference in the way I felt.

The Gluten Free Gourmet Cooks Fast and Healthy by Bette Hagman. Bette Hagman was recently honored by the Celiac Disease Foundation as a pioneer. She was the first to publish adapted recipes and start the conversation about Celiac Disease. All of her books are fantastic. I choose this one because it's a little lighter on calories. My only complaint is that I rarely bake enough to justify all of the different types of flours her recipes call for, so I end up wasting a lot of expensive flour. All of the recipes I've tried are amazing and tasty. I have even been able to feel comfortable enough with her recipes to experiment and personalize some of them with great success.

After years and years of constantly having my teeth rebuilt, I developed a upper and lower jaw bone infection, and my 2 dentists jointly decided that it was in my overall best interest to just have them pulled. It didn't matter how hard they or I tried, they just kept dying... They would be fine for about a year, and then by the end of the next year, they had all died again...
Do I need to buy all new everything? Is it okay to just run the dishwasher a lot? Is it okay to just keep things covered and to wipe stuff down before and after food prep? How obsessive do I need to be with this?
Any helpfull advice would be greatly appreciated.. I get to the point where I think I'm doing great.. then sick slaps me down again..
then I find out I've left something important out (or in as it may be)...

so, after many years of lots of various health probs (everything from skin and nerve irritations, muscle spasms, dental probs, mouth ulcers, the works) i finally figure out i have celiac (my stomach started seriously freaking out and i stopeed eating wheat and ... felt better). It also runs in my family - helpful because everyone is understanding (though most refuse to get tested).

anyway, the problem is this: i love to go out and eat. but figuring out what i can and can't eat has been really hard in restaurants. a woman i met who has celiac said that generally indian is ok, as long as nothing is breaded and thai stuff with peanut sauce is ok because they don't use soy sauce in peanut sauce. is this true? are there certain foods that we can eat or is everything on the menu (minus an undressed salad) off limits? (i know i have been hit pretty hard with some teas that have barley in them.)
are there specific questions i have to ask the (often non-native english speaker) servers?
please help!

After poking around posts and topics here, in addition to going around
to various stores in S.F., I wonder how satisfied everyone is with the
selection of items and if not, what are people doing about it?

For myself, I'm fairly new to the whole GF thing, but what I'm seeing
in the stores is fairly disappointing. I've recently visited
Andronico's (Inner Sunset), Rainbow Grocery, Whole Foods (california
st & soma), Real Foods Co. (stanyan & Cole) and Tower Market (Mollie
Stones). And although some of the staff, and even a store manager
have been involved in my quest, and they've been responsive at least
in conversation, I'm finding the motivation and product selection to
be scattered and inconsistent.

My experience boils down to either the stores don't carry items
because nobody buys them or the ones they do, are so frequently sold
out they can't keep them on the shelf. Either is a bad situation.
And I don't know about anyone else, but from my perspective, various
flours, baking mixes, $6 packages of crackers, a few puffed-rice
cereals, potato chips, breakfast bars, frozen loaves of bread, cookies
and brownies just don't cut it for a balanced and healthy diet.

I can see that perhaps my newness to this whole shebang may be biasing
my experience, but from where I sit, these products should be
available locally - I should, or anyone, should not have to waste time
and energy resources (e.g. fuel, parking, etc.) driving across town to
specialty stores for the few stocked items. I think with our
collective interests we can motivate retailers to carry a broader
range of items. They all have said "we get a lot of requests" but
they're still not stocking their shelves because they don't think
people will buy them before code dates, etc.

It's a catch 22. I can see that we collectively won't shop a store
that doesn't have these products readily available, that means stocked
and easy to find, and they won't stock them unless there is enough of
a demand. I'm for gathering our resources, voices, and pocket books
to collectively push to get out locals stores to stock foods that will
allows us a healthy diet with easy to find products.

Most notably, the managers I spoke with, I'd mentioned that "we all
have online support groups and we share info...you stock it...we'll
share the info and come buy it..." and this was met with raised
eyebrows and fast feet to give me a tour of GF items in the store.
Best response I got was from Tower Market/Mollie Stones, and the
bakery person said they were considering turning their on-site bakery
into the GF regional kitchen to distribute to the other stores.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Thanks,

I haven't yet been to the doctor and I'm rather disinclined to subject myself to most western medicine. For any problems I've ever had with my health I've always found natural alternatives that are cheaper and less invasive. I'd prefer to explore along that path, if possible.

Some of the symptoms include:

* Intestinal gas
* Distention and bloating
* Abdominal cramps
* Chronic diarrhea
* Constipation
* Anemia
* Weight loss or gain
* Depression

Interesting. I have most of those, but not anemia and not depression, unless there is a reason for it.

Also, I made gluten free cookies from the Gluten Free Pantry mix and I ate two of them while on a trip out of state. 15 minutes later, I was sort of sleeping and I had the most horrible cramping and I had a bad accident, but I didn't know it until my pants were wet. My poor husband pulled into a rest stop and I had to clean my underwear in the toilet because a bus full of senior citizens pulled in and were waiting in line to use the bathroom.

Any how, would anyone that was Celiac have such a severe reaction to gluten free products? I'm so confused about what the heck is going on. I've been on a diet of rice and potatoes for starches and occasionally non gluten free breads.

Has anyone else had such an experience with gluten free products?

Hi everyone. I'm hoping that some of you might have had a similar experience you'd be willing to share, or some advice...

The past few weeks I've been having horrible cramping and morning sickness (no, I've no chance of being pregnant), so started eliminating things out of my diet to see if the cramping would stop. I remembered that years ago, when I was doing Atkins, the IBS and mood swings completely stopped. When I introduced wheat and carbs back into my diet, it took years for those effects to come back again.

Lately, I've been trying very hard to cut out wheat and certain grains like barley out of my diet, but sometimes I slip up - and have no ill effects. It's like a certain amount needs to be ingested before the bad effects kick in. Is this true for others?

My theory is that my villi recovered during Atkins, but they might be damaged again in places. I have no idea if this is true, though.

I would like to get tested for Celiac, but from what I understand, you need to be eating wheat for the biopsy. So my question is, if this is so, is there a certain period of time during which one should be eating wheat, and does this also apply for the blood test as well? I won't be able to get a referral to a Dr. until the end of the month.

Thanks everyone!

She has been seeing a doctor that specializes in endometriosis and most of her patients are celiacs!! My friend has noticed that her endo gets much worse when she eats SUGAR.

My cramps are sooooooooooooooo bad that I am beginning to think I also have endo AND it gets worse when I eat even one tiny bite of sugar. I've been tested for endo, and my doc said I tested negative, but I am going to insist on another test because it was soooooo bad this month that I was going to get myself admitted to the hospital for a shot of demerol, which is the shot they give to women in labor to put them to sleep. I sleep for 2 days when I get the shot, but at least I don't hurt!!!

ACDA Launches Survey to Assist FDA on Gluten-Free
Labeling

The FDA's proposal for labeling products
'gluten-free' was
published on January 23, 2007. The FDA has
requested
feedback from consumers on several issues
relating to the
gluten-free diet, and how individuals make
choices about
gluten-free products.

The American Celiac Disease Alliance (ACDA) is
launching
a survey focused on several questions posed by
the FDA.
The survey was developed by dietitians with
expertise in the
gluten-free diet and who are associated with the
Dietitians in
Gluten Intolerance Diseases (DIGID), a specialty
subunit of
the American Dietetic Association.

Please take a few moments to complete this very
important
survey. The results will be compiled and
presented to the
FDA by the ACDA.

To access the survey go to the ACDA website
www.americanceliac.org/news.htm .

Your comments will help the FDA decide what type
of GF
labeling will be allowed in the United States.
The survey
closes on March 15.

Thank you for being an advocate for celiacs.

About the ACDA
The American Celiac Disease Alliance was
established in
March 2003 to provide leadership on public policy
issues
affecting those with celiac disease. The
non-profit serves
as a national umbrella organization representing
all segments
of the celiac community -- research centers,
physicians,
patients, food manufacturers, print media, and
the service
industry.

More information on the FDA proposal:
The FDA has prepared a series of questions and
answers to
help consumers understand the provisions of the
proposal.
Well, I was just informed about a brand new GF beer! Bard's Tale Dragon's Gold, made by Bard's Tale Beer. They are just beginning to distribute and need all our help in requesting it at our local stores. Please go to there website, click on your state, print up the request, sign it, and take it to your local store. If your lucky it might even be available already in your area:)
I want to apologize for not being very active these past few months. My 3 children have continued to struggle with intestinal issues, leaky gut-undigested food & one child passed a juvenile poylp. Oy!! Anyhow, after mind numbing research I came across a book that is changing all of my perceptions about what Celiac's Disease is and how it is best treated, apparently the original research done at the turn of the century was not focused on the GF diet as the solution, that is a recent development. Anyhow, it is a lot to explain, but for the first time I see my children starting to heal their damage little guts, so please read the website at least and I think it is worth buying the book. www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info & the book is "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" by Elaine Gotschall. I have to say that I feel ultra blessed to have found this info, but at the same time extremely shocked that I had not heard of this until now, as we have been struggling with these issues for nearly 5 years! So empower yourself and know all sides of the research!

I followed the directions perfectly as they are printed on the box in a working newish microwave and the plastic coating on the little tray/bolw bubbled up and peeled off in my food!!!! PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!! I can only asume they will recal this item as this is VERY dangerous, so if you have one of these items, or any other amys items in a tray in your freezer, dont eat it - call the company and see what is going on. They have not called me back yet so they wont have any official info on it but i will keep you guys updated!

get another call back from my gi doctor today and he ordered me more blood tests to again confirm that i may have it. aparently the sprue can be patchy and not affect the whole intestine and he could have just missed it. now my question is simply, what the hell? if they could do a few blood tests to confirm it in the first place then why did i need to go in and have evasive surgery done? anybody watch that 20/20 about unnesesary surgery? creepy....

The people working at talericos mercado in lake oswego swear they eat it all the time just because of its wonderful taste. i have to admit that i had a stomach/gut ache when i ate it (i am a celiac) but this could have been either from being new to cutting gluten out and still going through random body pain, or the fact that the pizza was the shit and i ate almost the whole thing to myself... check it out people, let me know how the tummy feels when you are done so i can brave the pizza once more!!!!
