i need support

ever since i went gluten-free, i have felt much better in general. but, now, when i accidentally ingest gluten- even in tiny amounts, the ill effects seem to be much worse than anything i ever experienced before. is this normal?

also, i am very frustrated because this latest "gluten stomach ache" (horrible cramps, nausea, gas, and burping) is apparently a result of a soup i made with nothing but g-f broth, g-f spices, rice noodles, beans, and vegetables. i have no idea why it has been making me so miserable. any ideas?

thanks.

It is completely normal to become more sensitive to smaller amounts of gluten as your body adjusts to being Gluten free.
Could it just be too much roughage? Thats a lot of fiber in there. Also, don't count out other intolerances. Certain veggies (mostly nightshades- tomatoes, bell pepper, potatoes and eggplant) wreak havoc with my stomach. Many Celiac's also develop issues with nightshades.

That sounds strikingly familiar to what it was like for me..I cheated and ate some fries on day and was sleeping my the toilet all night in total agony.

You have to also be sure to stay away from milk dairy at least until you are all healed up. A good way to know if you aren't is if you get sick after having milk products. When the villi in you intestines are damaged, you don't make the enzyme lactase that you need to break down those sugars..and it is awful...bloating cramps all that good stuff.

If you haven't check out Celiac.com. I don't know that my family could get by without it as our resource.

    Good Luck!

HI Cheryl - It might not be the specifics of what you had in your soup - it took me about 6 months to recover my digestive abilities after going on a totally gluten free diet. I actually felt worse before I felt better. Also a note about other food intolerances, when I went off of gluten I was having trouble with dairy, soy, and nightshades but I've been able to add them all back in after eliminating the gluten in my diet. It takes time to recover after a lifetime of ingesting something that one's body is having an immune response to. It helped me a lot to eat a lot of protein - which is needed to rebuild the intestinal lining. I even ate some chicken which was a big thing for me. Hope that helps!

i haven't done dairy in 9 years. don't seem to have trouble with soy or nightshades but will keep that in mind. i have noticed now that i cannot tolerate much sugar, even though i haven't been doing anything refined for many years. meat is new for me, too. i have been intuitively leaning toward a high protein diet right now. the soup was my comfort food, and i wanted it high in fiber b/c i had a yeast infection, which might be another related factor. i still have the stomach ache and other symptoms, no matter what i eat now.

what i'm wondering now is what the detoxification process is like for people.

i don't think refractory sprue is a possibility since i've only been gf for about a month. my intestines must still be healing. i am assuming that my symptoms are simply a result of sudden dietary shift and detoxification. today i feel much better than before. i do feel like i'm on the right track.
